Literacy

At The Eastbourne Academy, we view literacy as the gateway to a world of learning, curiosity, and ambition. With our vision to foster academic excellence and social-emotional growth, we have meticulously designed our literacy curriculum, centred around advanced reading comprehension, expressive writing, and dynamic oracy. Our aim is to empower every student, equipping them with the literacy skills to navigate an increasingly complex world.

 

Reading

Our staff, trained to enhance teaching of reading, are committed to developing students' ability to engage with and understand complex academic texts. We foster active engagement with reading materials, integrating strategies such as activating prior knowledge, prediction, and questioning. By modelling these strategies and offering group work, we nurture independent learners, ensuring they are confident in their reading abilities.

 

Writing

Recognising the complexities of writing, we put forth considerable efforts to guide our students towards becoming better writers. Through a structured approach, we break down writing tasks into manageable stages of planning, monitoring, and evaluation. We promote collaborative writing, offering our students a creative platform to express their thoughts, while recognising the importance of good writing within each subject. Additionally, our focused teaching of spelling, grammar, and punctuation emphasises meaning, making our students' writing not just accurate but also impactful.

 

Oracy 

We understand the importance of structured talk for learning. Our teachers model high-quality talk, integrating key vocabulary and reflective thinking. By implementing the 'accountable talk' framework, we ensure our students can articulate their thoughts, nurturing a more profound understanding of subject-specific communication.

 

Literacy Interventions

Our approach to literacy extends to providing bespoke interventions for students who need additional support, particularly in Year 7. We have implemented a tiered support model that aligns with the needs of each student, ensuring they receive the appropriate intervention. Our expertly trained staff offer reading interventions that are proven through research evidence, maximising the opportunity for effectiveness to ensure all our students rapidly improve their literacy skills.
